Artes is an independent journal of art criticism based in New York City. We cover exhibitions, artists, and the broader cultural landscape of one of the world's most important art cities. Our writing is rooted in close looking, careful research, and a commitment to making the experience of art more accessible without dumbing it down.
We believe that good criticism serves two audiences simultaneously: the person who has never set foot in a museum, and the person who visits one every week. Both deserve writing that takes art seriously, that treats the reader as intelligent, and that is honest about what works and what does not.
Founded in New York, Artes focuses primarily on exhibitions and collections at major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, as well as the galleries, artist-run spaces, and alternative venues that make the city's art scene so vital.
Our editorial interests include but are not limited to painting, sculpture, photography, installation, video art, and performance. We write long-form essays on individual artworks and artists, exhibition reviews, comparative guides to museums and galleries, and seasonal roundups of the best art exhibitions in New York City.
We are particularly interested in the experience of viewing art in person. Much of our writing addresses the practical and emotional reality of visiting museums and galleries: what to see, how to see it, and why the physical encounter with art matters in an age of digital reproduction.
Editor
Clara covers painting and sculpture with a focus on European and American modernism. She has written extensively about the collections at MoMA and the Met, and is the author of essays on artists ranging from Van Gogh and Monet to de Kooning and Agnes Martin. Before founding Artes, she contributed criticism to Art in America and Frieze.
Gallery Editor
Daniel specializes in contemporary photography exhibitions and the gallery scene in Chelsea, the Lower East Side, and Brooklyn. He writes our seasonal exhibition guides and reviews shows at institutions large and small. His interest lies in the intersection of documentary photography, conceptual art, and the New York art market.
Contributing Writer
Yuki covers East Asian art and cross-cultural exhibitions, bringing a comparative perspective to her writing about New York's museums. She is interested in how Western institutions present non-Western art and in the growing exchange between contemporary art scenes in New York and Tokyo. She holds an MA in art history from Columbia University.
